Until our positive pregnancy test, I hadn’t bothered finding an obstetrician in Lubbock. My doctor in Abilene had performed my surgery, administered the Depo Provera injections, and cared for all of my post-op needs. The idea of securing prenatal care had seemed presumptuous. Naïve, really.

Now that I was pregnant, it seemed urgent.

I asked my friends for recommendations without mentioning the pregnancy. Many of their doctors were not accepting new patients or were booked for months out. Finally, I got a name from a friend who’d finished having babies several years before. She said the doctor wasn’t especially warm, but she usually saw the nurse practitioner anyway. She told me the office staff were nice and easy to work with. Best of all, the doctor could see me the following week.
