Contemplating “Spirit”
I’m still thinking about words. Multiple meaning words, in particular. Spirit, in very particular.
Which meaning of the word “spirit” comes to you first?
Perhaps school spirit or being a spirited person? You could be in high spirits or hold to the spirit of the law. I immediately think of sprits of good and evil, and at the top of that list is the Holy Spirit.
All of these spirits share the root word “spir” which refers to breath and life. From this root, we also get the words respiration, inspire, and expire.
I also think of all the strip mall windows painted with the words “Wine and Spirits.” A cheap substitute, indeed, but how often have we tried to find the breath of life in a cocktail? It can be found, perhaps (life of the party, anyone?), but it’s short-lived.
I actually have a playlist called “Spirit,” full of songs that help me catch my breath and connect with the counselor, advocate, and voice of divinity within me. That’s my quickest path back to life. Of course, the garden is also full of spirit.
